Posting video content and content that is not my own are two things that I
don’t do very often, but when this collaborative effort between Magnum and i-D magazine came to my attention I was really quite excited. Magnum ice cream
in collaboration with i-D magazine and Xavier Dolan teamed up for a short film
competition entitled Be True To Your Pleasure, in which Dolan selected three
independent filmmakers and mentored them in producing their shorts.
If you aren’t familiar with his work, Xavier Dolan is a Canadian filmmaker and
actor, who at 26 already has five feature films (and many more as an actor)
and multiple awards under his belt. I saw his most recent release, Mommy, at
the Cornerhouse independent cinema in Manchester just before it closed, and
found it absolutely incredible. Although I am yet to see all five of his films (the
remaining are now at the top of my to-do list), I would consider Dolan one of
my favourite new filmmakers, and so I was particularly looking forward to
seeing and sharing the films that Dolan’s mentorees created for the
My personal favourite entry is Zap by Patrick Downing, which at 1 minute 29
seconds is the shortest of the three films. It is also perhaps the most quirky of
the three, featuring two elderly people (whose relationship to one another is
left ambiguous, an interesting feature of the film) whose ‘pleasure’ is giving
each other static shocks by shuffling down a carpeted hallway in their socks.
Whether it is down to the directing, the acting, or the story itself I’m not sure,
but the entire experience is so incredibly sweet and I think it captures perfectly
the joy in indulging in small pleasures, whatever they might be and whomever
you might be.
You can watch Zap above, or the other entries Kaiand Wild Space.
